Enhancing Public Value

Government agencies in the UK, USA, Australia and Canada are increasingly finding the creation and enhancement of public value to be their primary reason for intervention. From police forces in the UK to New York City schools to central agencies in the Australian state of Victoria, government agencies at all levels of government are re-inventing themselves with the intention of creating more value for the constituents they serve.

They are creating new roles that free up skilled professionals from lesser-skilled administrative tasks to focus on areas where they add the greatest value. They are working with underemployed indigenous populations to create new, low-cost outsourcing options that also achieve significant social goals, like increased employment levels and upskilling of target population segments. They are consolidating staff functions across agencies to achieve major cost savings. Some agencies are undergoing organisational redesigns, structuring and budgeting around outcomes rather than function.

The drive to enhance public value is taking root in New Zealand as well, and Newcastle Consulting Group is at the forefront of efforts at Land Information New Zealand (LINZ).
